The First Trailer for Damien Chazelle's First Man Has Landed

After directing back-to-back hits with "Whiplash" and "La La Land," on top of winning the Best Director Oscar for the latter, all eyes were on Damien Chazelle as everyone waited to see what he could possibly deliver next. While many might have been surprised that he would choose to tackle a biopic about Neil Armstrong, I don't think anyone should have been all that surprised at all. After all, his first two films had been rather ambitious (especially with the latter being a love letter to classic musicals), so a film about the Apollo 11 mission and the man who first set foot on the moon seems to follow right in stride.

Today, Universal had finally unveiled the first trailer for the film, giving us a good look at what we can expect from the upcoming biopic, and it's certainly looking like it's going to be quite the epic. With a cast that features Oscar nominee Ryan Gosling, Golden Globe and SAG Award winner Claire Foy, Emmy winner Kyle Chandler, Ciaran Hinds, and Corey Stoll, and a screenplay by Oscar winner Josh Singer ("Spotlight"), perhaps we should go ahead and pencil it in for a large number of nominations now, as it certainly looks like the kind of film that the Academy loves to shower praise on.

It's still a while yet before the film comes out, but you can be sure that this will be on a lot of people's "must-see" list. It's been on mine from the moment it was first announced, for after giving us a musical masterpiece with "La La Land," there's no telling what further greatness Chazelle can achieve.

"First Man" opens in theaters on October 12th, 2018.
