Your Name.: The Modern Anime Classic Makes Its North American 4K Debut (Limited Edition 4K/Blu-ray Steelbook)

The Film:

For over 20 years, director Makoto Shinkai has been making a name for himself in the realm of animation by delivering such critically-acclaimed, box office hits as "Weathering with You" and "Suzume," but the one that really put him on the map and made him a global success was his ambitious 2016 endeavor entitled "Your Name." The film was not only a smash hit that pulled in over $400 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing Japanese film at the time, but also received glowing reviews and multiple awards.

With the film celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, GKIDS & Shout! Studios are putting it in the spotlight and giving it a stunning 4K upgrade (marking its UHD debut in North America), while throwing in some in-depth extras as well, so now it's time to go back and revisit what has been deemed a modern classic by many to see just how well it's held up over the last decade. Was it truly deserving of the widespread acclaim that it received, or did critics perhaps go just a little overboard with their praise?

The film follows two high school students: Mitsuha Miyamizu (Voice of Mone Kamishiraishi), who lives in the rural area of Itomori with her grandmother and sister, and Taki Tachibana (Voice of Ryunosuke Kamiki), who lives in Tokyo with his father and works as a waiter. For some unknown reason, the two begin to switch bodies on certain days, forcing them to live out those days as the other person. Naturally this causes quite a lot of confusion, leading to them laying out some ground rules for each other to make it easier. Meanwhile, we are told of a seemingly-harmless comet that is passing close to Earth which will be clearly visible, but as we soon see, it will have a major impact on these kids that leads to tragedy and a desperate attempt to set things right.

As mentioned, "Your Name." is a rather ambitious tale, though the above synopsis might not make that immediately apparent, though a large part of that is because the film starts off with a completely different tone than what it ultimately becomes. As the story begins, one gets the distinct impression that this is going to be some kind of goofy, playful, and potentially romantic outing, one that even comes complete with what could be a standard anime opening to any such series, and indeed a good portion of the film proceeds just like that. With Mitsuha & Taki's body-switching dilemma, hilarity naturally ensues as they try to live random days in each other's shoes, attempting to follow their rules, and muddling through with friends & family.

However, all of that playful goofiness is set aside when the film has a somewhat jarring tonal shift in the middle, bringing us to its true purpose. This is where the plot begins to extend into the aforementioned ambitious areas that have the story encompassing a shocking tragedy, communicating across time, and a bold attempt to change the past. Obviously this is being kept purposely vague so as not to divulge too much about the film's twists & turns, but the point is that it goes far beyond what it appears to be at its outset. It's more than a little fair to say that the story gets a little wonky as it tries to bring everything together, but it remains rather compelling & gripping as you wait to see the result of the characters' actions.

Throw in the gorgeous animation & a talented vocal cast, and it's easy to see why the film garnered the reputation that it has. Makoto Shinkai could have easily settled for a far-lighter, sillier outing with the premise he introduces early on, but that wouldn't have been nearly as memorable or unique as what he ultimately chose to develop the story into. Simply put, "Your Name." is big, bold, and beautiful, and with it finally getting a 4K UHD upgrade in North America, it's definitely well-worth it for fans & newcomers alike to add it to their personal collections.

"Your Name." comes to 4K in a 1.78:1, 2160p Ultra High Definition transfer of gorgeous quality. The picture looks absolutely stunning throughout its entire 107-minute duration, perfectly highlighting its beautiful animation. Likewise, the 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack is marvelous, giving you all of the dialogue, sound effects, and music in excellent quality. Overall, GKIDS & Shout! Studios have done a wonderful job in both departments for the film's North American 4K debut.

Conclusion:

Makoto Shinkai's "Your Name." is a big, bold, and beautiful anime adventure that's able to transcend a seemingly-silly set-up to become an ambitious tale told across time, one whose mid-way tonal shift may be a bit jarring and whose story may be a little unsteady as it tries to bring it all together, but which manages to remain compelling & gripping once its true nature is revealed, ultimately making it quite easy to see why the film has received such a glowing reputation from critics & fans alike.
