The Winners of the 93rd Annual Academy Awards

The 93rd Annual Academy Awards have just concluded with the unfortunate and obvious result of "Nomadland" taking the top prize, with a bizarre ceremonial screw-up that had the Best Picture award announced before the final two acting awards. The film also won Best Director (Chleo Zhao) and Best Actress (Frances McDormand).

As far as upsets go, Best Actress went to Frances McDormand for "Nomadland" after Viola Davis had won the SAG Award for "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom," but McDormand had won the BAFTA, so it was definitely a possibility. Likewise, Sir Anthony Hopkins unexpectedly won Best Actor for his stunning performance in "The Father" after Chadwick Boseman had been winning most awards for his final turn in "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom," but Hopkins also won the BAFTA, so it was definitely within the realm of possibility.

Cinematography unexpectedly went to "Mank" after "Nomadland" had dominated in almost every spot throughout the season, but "Mank" did win the American Society of Cinematography's top award, so it was another strong possibility. Film Editing was a bit of a toss-up between BAFTA winner "Sound of Metal" and ACE winner "The Trial of the Chicago 7," with it ultimately going to the former.

Overall, it finally brings an end to one of the dullest awards seasons in recent memory, with yet another film winning the top prize that will be forgotten by next week. As we always find ourselves saying at this juncture, we can only hope that the Academy will do better next year... but there's certainly no reason to count on that.
