Producers Guild, Directors Guild, and American Cinema Editors Announce Nominees

Today was a huge day for awards season, with the Producers Guild of America (PGA), Directors Guild of America (PGA), and the American Cinema Editors (ACE) all announcing their film nominees for 2021.

As far as surprises go, there really aren't any to be found in the PGA nominations. All ten of these films were strong possibilities and include all of the major players. Same goes for the DGA. In fact, these were the exact five nominees expected to make the cut. The only slight surprise in the editing categories is the lack of Spielberg's "West Side Story, which was expected to make it in pretty easily.

Heading into this big day of nominations, we were basically down to three films in the running for the Best Picture Oscar: "The Power of the Dog," "Belfast," and "Licorice Pizza," all of which have been popular top prize winners throughout the critics awards, as well as being included in the Golden Globe nominees for Best Screenplay. This may not seem important, but for the last 16 years in a row, that category has included the eventual Best Picture Oscar winner ("Don't Look Up" and "Being the Ricardos" were also nominated, but have not won a single Best Picture award).

Additionally, there has only been one film to win Best Picture without first getting a nomination in the DGA's top category since the expansion to five nominees over 70 years ago ("Driving Miss Daisy"), and now that all three top contenders have officially gotten that nomination, we're no closer to knowing who the big winner will be than we were before. "The Power of the Dog" has been dominating Best Picture and Director awards with the critics, but will the industry feel the same way? We'll just have to wait until their respective ceremonies to find out. The ACE Awards will be held on March 5th, the DGA Awards on March 12th, and the PGA Awards will be on March 19th.

In the meantime, please see below for these guilds' top nominations:
