Nominations for the 95th Annual Academy Awards

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has just finished announcing their nominations for the 95th Annual Academy Awards, and as always, there were quiet a few surprises to be found. Not surprising was that "Everything Everywhere All at Once" led the way with a whopping 11 nominations, followed not too far behind by "The Banshees of Inisherin" and "All Quiet on the Western Front" with nine each.

The acting categories had plenty of surprises, including the last-minute appearances of Michelle Williams for "The Fabelmans" and Andrea Riseborough for "To Leslie" in Lead Actress, and Brian Tyree Henry for "Causeway" and Judd Hirsch for "The Fabelmans" in Supporting Actor. These additions knocked out presumed nominees like Viola Davis, Danielle Deadwyler, Paul Dano, and Eddie Redmayne.

Other shocks included seeing "Top Gun: Maverick" turn up in Adapted Screenplay (presumably knocking out "The Whale"), yet getting snubbed for Cinematography (a category it was well on its way to winning). The fifth Director slot had been entirely up for grabs, and The Academy's Directors Branch ultimately made the rather strange choice of going with Ruben Ostlund for "Triangle of Sadness." Finally, the last immediately noticeable surprise is seeing "Women Talking" make an appearance in Best Picture after making a rather poor showing elsewhere (snubbed by the Producers Guild and entirely shut out by BAFTA).

Best Picture still appears to be between the top two films of the year: "The Banshees of Inisherin" and "Everything Everywhere All at Once." As the major guilds and BAFTA announce their winners over the next month, hopefully the final outcome will become more clear, but until then, this remains a very close race.

The winners will be announced at the annual ceremony on March 12th, so be sure to check back for a list of winners. Until then, please see below for a list of this morning's Oscar nominees:
