Nominations for the 2021 BAFTA Awards

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has just finished announcing their nominees, and it's certainly fair to say that it's not exactly what was expected. Leading the way are "Nomadland" and "Rocks" with seven nominations each, followed by "The Father," Mank," "Minari," and "Promising Young Woman" with six.

Where to even begin? The acting nominations were all over the place and included multiple surprises, including Alan Kim for "Minari," Adarsh Gourav for "The White Tiger," and other nominees from "Rocks" and "Calm with Horses," two films that most have probably not heard of. The biggest and most notable snub here was seeing Carey Mulligan miss for her extraordinary performance in "Promising Young Woman," made even stranger by the fact that the film received so many other nods.

The Director category was another big shocker, with surprise appearances from Thomas Vinterberg for "Another Round," Shannon Murphy for "Babyteeth" (the film's only nod), Jasmila Žbanić for "Quo Vadis, Aida?", and Sarah Gavron for "Rocks". No David Fincher, Emerald Fennell, or Aaron Sorkin.

Suffice it to say, I think it's safe to assume that the Oscar nominations are going to look very different from these. It looks like "Nomadland" is the clear favorite to win here, just like it's been doing everywhere, but we'll just have to wait until the ceremony on April 11th to find out.
