The Shorts:
Like with so many others, "Looney Tunes" and "Merry Melodies" were a cornerstone of my childhood. Even back then, you could still find these classics, which featured beloved characters like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Sylvester & Tweety, Foghorn Leghorn, and so many others, playing on television over and over. That may not be the case today, but that hasn't stopped Warner Bros. from trying to make the collection of cartoons, which spanned for nearly 40 years from 1930-1969, available in one form or another.
On that note, here we have the latest collection, "Looney Tunes: Collector's Vault - Volume 1," which includes 50 cartoons on two discs. The first contains 25 shorts, including work from directors Tex Avery, Chuck Jones, and Fritz Freleng, while the second disc contains 25 fan favorites that feature the characters above and others, such as Pepe Le Pew, Speedy Gonzalez, and Porky Pig (some of which are the characters' first appearance). There isn't really a good way to give a synopsis of them, but it's not like they really need an introduction. If you know these characters, you know full-well what kind of trouble, mayhem, and hijinks they get into, and when they have their minds set on something, you know they're going to go at it full-tilt, even as it continues to cause great bodily harm... and great amusement for the audience.
What can one really say about the classic misadventures of these beloved characters? Whether it's Wile E. Coyote trying to catch the Road Runner, Sylvester trying to nab Tweety, or Bugs Bunny just causing general chaos, they were always wildly entertaining to watch. Even now, decades later, they remain a delight to see for their vintage animation, brilliant voice work, the eccentric personalities of the characters, and the simple, yet engaging nature of their brief stories.
Cartoons like these never needed anything overly complicated to give the audience a good time. All that was required was a character with a typically simple goal, like catching/stealing an animal (a very common theme), to deliver approximately six to nine minutes of charming fun, which, as mentioned, always seemed to involve the toons getting hurt via explosions or simply getting mauled, and this amazing new collection is no exception.
Here we have 50 shorts, totaling about six hours, that feature not only many of the well-known characters of the "Looney Tunes" line-up, but also several stand-alone cartoons that some might not be as familiar with, giving the set an intriguing mix of the familiar and a few that may be new to some viewers. Overall, this is a wonderful set for anyone looking for a nice bit of nostalgia, and is particularly great for collectors looking to add these restored classics to their personal collections, making it an easy recommendation for them or for anyone who simply enjoys the antics of these beloved characters.
Video/Audio:
"Looney Tunes: Collector's Vault - Volume 1" presents 50 cartoons in 1.37:1, 1080p High Definition transfers of excellent quality. These shorts may be several decades old at this point, but the visuals have been cleaned up beautifully for this collection. Likewise, the 2.0 DTS-HD Master Audio tracks are marvelous, giving you all of the dialogue, sound effects, and music in outstanding quality. Overall, Warner Bros. has done a fantastic job restoring these classics for their Blu-ray debut.
