Film Nominations for the 28th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards

The Screen Actors Guild has just finished announcing their nominations for 2021, and there were certainly plenty of big surprises to be had, with the first being that "House of Gucci" tied with "The Power of the Dog" for the most nominations with three. This is immediately followed by another big surprise: "House of Gucci" managed to nab a nomination for Best Cast, while "The Power of the Dog," with three individual nominations, somehow didn't.

Other surprises included the perplexing inclusion of "Don't Look Up" in Best Cast, the snubbing of Kristen Stewart for "Spencer" (the clear favorite for Best Actress up to this point), both Ciaran Hinds AND Jamie Dornan getting snubbed for "Belfast," and Cate Blanchett making a surprise appearance in Supporting Actress for "Nightmare Alley."

The biggest disappointment here is obviously the snubbing of the single best ensemble of the year: Ann Dowd, Jason Isaacs, Martha Plimpton, and Reed Birney for "Mass." It seems quite clear that the nominating committee didn't watch the film, or else it would easily have gotten in over several of these Best Cast nominees.

As to who will win, I would guess "Belfast" has cast (though "CODA" could take it), while Actor feels like a bit of a toss-up between Cumberbatch, Smith, and Garfield, and Actress suddenly being very open as well (Chastain or Gaga would be my guess). We'll just have to wait until the ceremony on February 27th to see who wins, so be sure to check back.
