The Screen Actors Guild has just finished handing out their awards for 2019 with a small shocker that saw Bong Joon Ho's "Parasite" taking the top award for Best Cast of a Motion Picture. This makes for the second year in a row that the top prize went to a film that had no individual nominations, and only the fourth time in SAG history that that's happened. It also marks the second year in a row where all five of the main film prizes went to different films.
The only big upset occurred in the TV awards where several upsets took place, including "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" beating "Fleabag" for Comedy Cast, Jennifer Aniston beating several top opponents for Drama Actress, and Sam Rockwell winning Actor in a TV Movie or Mini-Series. It was a bit of a disappointment to see "Game of Thrones" lose Drama Cast on its final try, but if it had to happen, at least it was to the brilliant cast of "The Crown." However, we did finally get to see Peter Dinklage take Drama Actor for his marvelous work on "Game of Thrones."
So how does all of this affect the awards race? Well, since all four of the individual film awards went to the same frontrunners who won the Critics' Choice and Golden Globes, I think it's safe to say that these are the Oscar favorites. After losing at the PGA Awards last night, "Parasite" really needed this to stay in the race, but seeing as how the Best Cast Award doesn't mean much by itself, it will still need to win big at either the Writers Guild Awards or the Directors Guild Awards.
Speaking of the DGA Awards, they are the next big stop on our trip through awards season, so be sure to check back late Saturday to see if presumed frontrunner Sam Mendes wins for his outstanding war epic "1917," or if Bong Joon Ho pulls a last-minute surprise with "Parasite."
