The Winners of the 2019 BAFTA Awards

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has just finished handing out their awards for 2018, with a rather exciting, nail-biting finish. However, in the end, it was Alfonso Cuaron's "Roma" that took the top prize of Best Film (as expected), along with Best Director (Cuaron), Best Cinematography (Cuaron), and Best Film Not in the English Language.

However, in terms of wins, it was Yorgos Lanthimos' "The Favourite" that dominated with the most awards, with seven total that included Outstanding British Film, Best Actress (Olivia Colman), Best Supporting Actress (Rachel Weisz), and Best Original Screnplay (Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara). For a while there, it seemed like it was headed toward winning Best Film, but in the end, they just loved "Roma" a little more.

In terms of what this means for the Oscars, it looks like "Roma" is still on track to be the big winner there as well. We can expect a lot of repeat winners there, including Malek, Ali (who became the only actor this year to sweep all four major awards), and more than likely Weisz. Colman's chances are still alive, but with Close winning the SAG Award, it would still appear to be the latter's to lose.

"Blackkklansman" got a much needed win here after being shockingly snubbed for the USC Scripter Award. If Spike Lee and co. are able to repeat their victory at the Writers Guild of America Awards next week, then it would appear that they have the Oscar in the bag.

Seeing "Vice" win Film Editing was a bit of a surprise after it lost to "The Favourite" at the ACE Awards earlier this month, but with the shocking snubs of "First Man" and "Roma," it would now appear to be the frontrunner for the Oscar. As far as Visual Effects go, BAFTA gave that honor to "Black Panther," which is not even nominated for the Oscar, so that category remains a tossup (probably between "Avengers: Infinity War" and "First Man").

Overall, it was a rather exciting ceremony, with lots of deserving winners. Next up on the awards calendar are the WGA Awards on Sunday, February 17th, so be sure to check back then to see who the winners are.
