The Winners of the 25th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards

Black Panther

The 25th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards has just concluded, and unlike last year where we pretty much knew every film winner beforehand, tonight saw plenty of surprises.

The first shock of the night came when Emily Blunt received Best Supporting Actress for her role in "A Quiet Place," a role that she did not get a subsequent Oscar nod for. The second surprise of the evening came with Rami Malek winning Best Actor for "Bohemian Rhapsody" over frontrunner (at least after the snubbed Ethan Hawke) Christian Bale for "Vice." Finally, the evening concluded with the most random and perhaps most shocking twist of all: "Black Panther" winning Best Cast despite having no individual nominations, resulting in all five awards going to different films.

As had already been noted, Best Cast was unfortunately a rather meaningless category this year, what with the shocking and inexcusable snub of "The Favourite," who has been the clear frontrunner for the category throughout the season. And speaking of frontrunners, it looks like we now have new frontrunners for both Actor and Actress, given that the individual SAG Awards are usually pretty good indicators of who will be taking home the Oscar.

The exception here is obviously Emily Blunt, who, as mentioned, didn't receive an Oscar nod for her performance, meaning the category will remain a mystery for now. A similar instance happened a few years back when Idris Elba won Best Supporting Actor for his role in "Beasts of No Nation," while unfortunately not receiving the corresponding Oscar nod. In that case, BAFTA helped point the way when they awarded Mark Rylance for "Bridge of Spies." It's starting to look like we'll have to count on BAFTA again to show us the way.

The next big event on the awards calendar is the Directors Guild of America Awards on Saturday, February 2nd, where it's highly expected that Alfonso Cuaron will win the top award for "Roma." Be sure to check back then to see who the big winners are.
