Los Angeles, New York (Online), Toronto, and San Francisco Announce Their 2018 Awards

Roma

It was a big day for film critics awards today, with the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, the New York Film Critics Online, the Toronto Film Critics Association, and the San Francisco Film Critics Circle all announcing their year-end picks. The fascinating thing here is that all four groups were in agreement, naming Alfonso Cuaron's "Roma" as the best film of 2018. New York and Toronto also awarded the film Best Director, while Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco also awarded it Best Cinematography. Additionally, San Francisco also named it Best Foreign Language film.

Only a few things happened out of the ordinary today, such as Los Angeles and Toronto giving Best Supporting Actor to Steven Yeun for "Burning," while San Francisco gave theirs to Michael B. Jordan for "Black Panther." Meanwhile, Los Angeles (known to make an odd pick or three every year) gave their Best Director award to Debra Granik for "Leave No Trace," with San Francisco giving Spike Lee his first win in the category for "Blackkklansman."

Overall, it's a wonderful group of winners, including four more Best Actor wins for Ethan Hawke ("First Reformed"), four more Best Supporting Actress wins for Regina King ("If Beale Street CouldTalk"), two more Best Actress wins for Olivia Colman ("The Favourite"), and Melissa McCarthy's first two Best Actress wins for "Can You Ever Forgive Me?"

The next big event coming up this awards season is the Screen Actors Guild nominations, which are scheduled to take place on Wednesday morning at 10 am, so be sure to check back and see who makes the cut as we continue down the long path to the Oscars.
