Nominations for the 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has just announced the nominees for their annual Golden Globe Awards, and as usual, there are plenty of surprises to be found among them. For starters, I don't think anyone could have predicted that Adam McKay's Dick Cheney biopic, "Vice," would be leading the way with six nods, including Best Picture (Comedy/Musical), Best Director, Best Screenplay, and three acting nominations. Several films followed right behind with five, including "The Favourite," "Green Book," and "A Star is Born."

Perhaps most shocking of all, however, is the disappointing omission of Yorgos Lanthimos from Best Director for his stunning work on "The Favourite." The HFPA clearly loved the film, nominating it in Best Picture (Comedy/Musical), Best Screenplay, and giving it three acting nods, so a Best Director snub is quite perplexing, especially considering the odd alternatives chosen (Cooper, McKay, and Farrelly).

It's also a bit surprising to find "Black Panther" in the Best Picture (Drama) category, though not altogether unexpected. However, it turns out to be a rather empty nod given that the film's only other nominations are in Best Original Score and Best Original Song. Something similar could be said about "Bohemian Rhapsody," which scored a Best Picture (Drama) nod, but only managed to get one additional nod in Best Actor (Drama) for Rami Malek.

Other than that, the expected nominees are all here. Now we just have to wait until January 6th to see who the big winners are.
