Nominations for the 90th Annual Academy Awards

The nominations for the 90th Annual Academy Awards have just been announced, and as usual there were a few surprises to be had this morning. What was not surprising however was seeing Guillermo del Toro's "The Shape of Water" lead the way with a whopping 13 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Original Screenplay. The film was followed at a distance by Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk" with eight, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Film Editing.

Perhaps the most notable, and extremely unfortunate, snub this morning was the omission of Martin McDonagh from the category of Best Director for "Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri," which hurts the film's chances at winning Best Picture considerably. After receiving nods from the BFCA, HFPA, BAFTA, and the DGA, it seemed like a certain nomination, but unfortunate he was replaced at the last minute with Paul Thomas Anderson for "Phantom Thread," a film that made an impressive (and quite unexpected) showing this morning.

So looking at what the Best Picture options are now, do we officially say that "The Shape of Water" is the frontrunner? It still seems highly unlikely with its lack of a Best Cast nod from SAG and practically no screenplay support. However, it's the only film that hit all of the major categories of Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Film Editing. Perhaps "Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri" is still in the lead, and will just have to win without a Best Director nod like "Argo" did back in 2013. After all, it's been the stats leader up to this point, and did extremely well with SAG the other night. One thing's for sure, rules are going to be broken somewhere, making this a nail-biter right up to the moment the winners are announced.

The next event on the awards calendar is the Directors Guild of America Awards, which take place on February 3rd, followed by the Writers Guild of America Awards on February 11th, and the BAFTA Awards on February 18th, so be sure to check back to see who wins in this very uncertain awards race.

In the meantime, please see below for a complete list of this morning's Oscar nominees. Winners will be announced on March 4th.
