The 75th Annual Golden Globe Awards have just wrapped up with an unexpected, but incredibly wonderful, result. Martin McDonagh's spectacular "Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri" has won the top award for Best Motion Picture (Drama), along with Best Actress (Drama) (Frances McDormand), Best Supporting Actor (Sam Rockwell), and Best Screenplay (McDonagh). On the Comedy/Musical side, Greta Gerwig's "Lady Bird" walked away with Best Motion Picture and Best Actress (Saoirse Ronan).
It's interesting to note that the only really big surprises were in some of the most competitive categories. Best Screenplay was thought to be leaning towards Greta Gerwig for "Lady Bird, while many were predicting Guillermo del Toro's "The Shape of Water" to take Best Motion Picture Drama. However, it was something of a genuine surprise to see Allison Janney win Best Supporting Actress for "I, Tonya" over Laurie Metcalf for "Lady Bird," the latter of which has been dominating the award season thus far. It was also pretty shocking, but absolutely amazing, to see Sam Rockwell win Best Supporting Actor over Willem Dafoe, whom many assumed to be the frontrunner.
All-in-all, it was a wonderful evening, one that will hopefully set the stage for the upcoming Oscars. However, we still have a long way to go until then, including a very busy next few days that see the BAFTA nominations on the 10th, DGA nominations the morning/afternoon of the 11th, and the Critics' Choice Awards the evening of the 11th, so be sure to check back for complete coverage of these big events.
