Producers Guild of America Nominations for 2017

Earlier today, the Producers Guild of America announced their nominees for their year-end awards in both film and television, resulting in a group of 11 feature film nominees for their top award that were mostly expected, but with a surprise or two thrown in.

First off, the major players still left in the Best Picture race all made the cut, including "Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri," "Lady Bird," and "Get Out." They are joined by other common nominees such as "The Post," "Call Me by Your Name," "The Shape of Water," and "Dunkirk." The biggest surprises in the main category are definitely "Wonder Woman," which received pretty good reviews, but was not expected to compete with the big award movies, and "Molly's Game," which, to my knowledge, has not received a Best Picture nomination from any group thus far.

What's particularly fascinating about this year is that no one is sure which film is going to walk away with the top honor (whereas last year it would have been shocking if anything other than "La La Land" won), though I think we can safely narrow it down to the three I mentioned earlier. "Lady Bird" and "Get Out" have received nominations for SAG's Best Cast award and the WGA's Original Screenplay award, while "Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri" has also been nominated for SAG's Best Cast (and would have no doubt been nominated by the WGA if it weren't for their asinine rules that disqualified it).
