The nominations for the 69th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards have just been announced, and as usual there are plenty of surprises to be found, starting off with the fact that both "Westworld" and "Saturday Night Live" have tied for the most nominations with 22. They were followed at a distance by "Stranger Things" and "Feud: Bette and Joan" with 18.
Of course, there were also many that weren't a surprise in the least, including critically-acclaimed shows like "The Crown" (13), "The Handmaid's Tale" (13), and "This is Us" (11), all of which are considered to be top contenders for the big award of the night, Outstanding Drama Series. With "Game of Thrones" being absent this year, it's something of a toss-up, but if I had to guess, I would say that the excellent Netflix show "The Crown" has the best chance, given its superior writing, directing, and cast (just three of its multiple nominations).
The love for "Westworld" was really quite a surprise. The show was ok, despite the writing being somewhat average, but the Television Academy saw fit to nominate it all over the place, including all four major acting categories, in addition to writing, directing, and cast. Does this mean it has an edge? Perhaps, but several shows got nominated for the major awards (i.e. Series, Writing, Directing, Cast, and individual acting), so all we can really do is guess as to which one they like best.
We'll just have to wait until the ceremony to find out. The 69th annual Primetime Emmy Awards will take place on September 17th at 8pm (EST) and will air on CBS. Until then, you can see a list of some of the major nominations below and download a complete list as a PDF here.
