The Winners of the 2017 BAFTA Awards

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has just finished announcing their awards for 2017 with Damien Chazelle's musical masterpiece "La La Land" taking the top prize for a total of five wins that included Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Music. The next closest winners were "Manchester by the Sea" (Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay) and "Lion" (Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay) with two apiece.

As far as surprises go, there were certain plenty to be had. In fact, I count about nine categories that turned out completely different than most thought. For starters, both of the wins for "Lion" were entirely unexpected, with Mahershala Ali presumed the easy winner for Supporting Actor and "Arrival" the most likely winner in Adapted Screenplay.

Elsewhere, many of the smaller awards went completely awry as well. It was assumed that "La La Land" would have no trouble picking up Editing and Production Design, but the British Academy felt a little different. "Zootopia" has been dominating the Animated Feature category on its way to the Oscars, but "Kubo and the Two Strings" pulled a surprise victory here instead.

All-in-all, I think that many of these results won't continue over to the Oscars, which could possibly include Best Actor due to Affleck losing the SAG award to Denzel Washington (who wasn't even nominated for the BAFTA). At this point in the race, we've see just how loved "La La Land" is what with it winning major guild prizes from the PGA, DGA, ACE, and ADG (and that's just so far). This is not to mention the fact that "Florence Foster Jenkins" isn't even nominated for Make Up, while "Son of Saul" was already up for the Oscars last year.

I think it's pretty safe to say that we're still headed straight for a "La La Land" sweep of nine or ten wins, a number we'll probably be able to finalize once the remaining guilds (including the WGA) announce over these final two weeks.As always, we'll just have to wait until the big night to see how it all plays out.
