The Winners of the 23rd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards

Hidden Figures

Tonight, the Screen Actors Guild handed out their awards for 2016, ending with the cast of "Hidden Figures" receiving the group's highest honor of Best Cast in a Motion Picture. It was certainly an unexpected result, for it was thought that Barry Jenkins' coming-of-age drama "Moonlight" would take the award rather easily, but still a great choice.

When it comes to the other film awards, the only other big surprise was Denzel Washington taking Best Actor for "Fences" over presumed winner Casey Affleck for "Manchester by the Sea." Will this lead to Washington's third Oscar win? At this point, it doesn't seem particularly likely, what with the love for Affleck's performance. After all, it's extremely difficult to win a third Oscar, and while it's a fine performance, it doesn't really seem like it has enough steam to nab him another one quite yet. My money would still be on Affleck to win on the big night.

The rest of the film awards went exactly as expected, with Emma Stone ("La La Land"), Mahershala Ali ("Moonlight"), and Viola Davis ("Fences") taking their respective awards and solidifying their places as the Oscar front-runners.

As far as the TV awards go, the only major surprise was "Stranger Things" winning Best Cast for a Drama Series. A fine cast to be sure, but better than "The Crown," "Game of Thrones," and "Downton Abbey?" It's a somewhat questionable choice, but at least "The Crown" and "Game of Thrones" didn't go home empty-handed, with the former taking Best Actor (John Lithgow) and Best Actress (Claire Foy) in a Drama Series and the latter winning Best TV Stunt Ensemble (for the sixth consecutive year).

Looking at how this effects the rest of the awards race, the Best Cast win for "Hidden Figures" doesn't really change anything what with the immense popularity of "La La Land" (which wasn't up for Best Cast, but that's simply because it's not an ensemble film). With major victories from the Critics' Choice, Golden Globes, and especially the Producers Guild of America, Damien Chazelle's wonderful musical remains the unbeatable competitor.

Coming up next, we have the Directors Guild of America Awards on Saturday night, so be sure to check back to see if Damien Chazelle continues the amazing streak of "La La Land."
