Nominations for the 89th Annual Academy Awards
The nominations for the 89th Annual Academy Awards have just been announced, with Damien Chazelle's masterful musical "La La Land" leading the way with a record-tying 14 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Original Screenplay. "Arrival" and "Moonlight" followed at quite a distance with eight nods each, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
Looking through this list, I can't say that there's anything particularly surprising. We all knew "La La Land" was going to do very well, but perhaps not THIS well. It is rather disappointing to see Martin Scorsese's brilliant "Silence" reduced to just a nomination for Best Cinematography, but there are plenty of great films here to celebrate, including "Manchester by the Sea" and "Hacksaw Ridge," both of which nabbed six nominations this morning, including Best Picture and Best Director.
As I've said before, "La La Land" remains the film to beat, and hopefully we'll get confirmation of that this weekend with the Producers Guild of America Awards, where it's fully expected to take their top prize. While a lot of these categories seem like locks at the moment, we'll learn more as the other guilds have their say over the next month, leading right up to Oscar night on Sunday, February 26th. Be sure to check back then for the winners.
