Nominations for the 2017 BAFTA Awards

      January 10, 2017

      by Jeff Beck

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has just finished announcing their nominations for 2017 with Damien Chazelle's marvelous musical "La La Land" (unsurprisingly) leading the pack with a whopping 11 nominations, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor, and Best Actress. "Arrival" and "Nocturnal Animals" followed with nine nominations each, including Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.

As far as surprises go, there were plenty to be found, including their immense love of Tom Ford's "Nocturnal Animals," a film that hasn't seen more than a few nominations from critics' groups throughout the season. However, stranger still was that, despite BAFTA giving it nine nominations (including several major nods), the film somehow didn't receive a nod for Best Film.

There's also the unexpected inclusion of "I, Daniel Blake" (winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes last year), a film which most Americans aren't going to be familiar with, which received several major nominations that include Best Film, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay.

Another particularly interesting surprise is the very scarce inclusion of Barry Jenkins' "Moonlight," which only managed to nab four nominations (Best Film, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Original Screenplay). The film, which has been incredibly popular throughout the critics' awards, was left out of several assumed categories, including Best Director for Jenkins, Best Editing, and Best Cinematography.

Even before these nominations, we all knew that Chazelle's "La La Land" was going to be the film to beat, and now that it's dominated with 11 nods (including all relevant major categories), it looks like it will continue to be so.

Will we see a similar sweep to the Critics' Choice and Golden Globes? Check back in on Sunday, February 12th to find out!
