First Trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales Sets Sail

At long last, Disney has finally unleashed out first look at the upcoming fifth entry in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise, subtitled "Dead Men Tell No Tales," which is set to mark the return of everyone's favorite pirate, Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp).

The teaser gives us just a brief glimpse of the film, as expected, but at least we do get a good look at Academy Award winner Javier Bardem as the villainous Captain Salazar, and he certainly looks creepy to say the least.

Besides three-time Academy Award nominee Johnny Depp, also expected to return are Orlando Bloom as Will Turner (last seen captaining the Flying Dutchman), Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa, and Kevin McNally as Mr. Gibbs, Captain Sparrow's right-hand man.

For the most part, I've been a pretty big fan of the franchise. I enjoyed the first film, and enjoyed the second and third films even more. However, when it came to the fourth entry ("On Stranger Tides"), it looked as though the series was stating to lose a little steam given that film's bland and forgettable story. Hopefully the six year break will have given the folks behind the franchise plenty of time to regroup and come up with something far more exciting this time around. Screenwriter Jeff Nathanson's filmography is a little shaky, but he did give us the great "Catch Me If You Can" and the decently-funny "Tower Heist," so perhaps he'll be able to deliver a memorable entry in a franchise that needs some fresh ideas.

"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" arrives in theaters on May 26, 2017.
