Director Denis Villeneuve has had a rather interesting career over the past few years. After breaking out with his Oscar-nominated film "Incendies," he went on to direct the tense thriller "Prisoners" with Hugh Jackman and Paul Dano, as well as the very divisive "Enemy," starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a man who meets his twin. However, perhaps his biggest success thus far came just last year with the critically acclaimed and Oscar-nominated thriller "Sicario," with Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro, and Josh Brolin.
Today, we have the first teaser for his latest project, a film entitled "Arrival," and while we're only given a few brief glimpses of what it's all about, I must say that it looks rather intriguing.
A synopsis makes it sound even more so:
When mysterious spacecraft touch down across the globe, an elite team - lead by expert linguist Louise Banks - are brought together to investigate. As mankind teeters on the verge of global war, Banks and the team race against time for answers - and to find them, she will take a chance that could threaten her life, and quite possibly humanity.
It's certainly shaping up to be a talent-packed film. Aside from Villeneuve in the director's chair, the film stars Oscar nominees Amy Adams ("Doubt," "American Hustle") and Jeremy Renner ("The Hurt Locker"), in addition to Oscar winner Forest Whitaker ("The Last King of Scotland").
Aliens coming to Earth for one reason or another might seem a little cliche at this point, but given the amazing talent involved, I'm definitely willing to give it a shot in hopes of getting the next great science-fiction film. Just like with horror, sci-fi is a genre where it's rather hard to come up with anything original, and while the synopsis doesn't exactly make it sound like it's headed in that direction, there's always hope that something extraordinary will result from the incredible names involved.
Denis Villeneuve's "Arrival" lands in theaters on November 11th, 2016.
